**Collaborative post**
Many babies and small children struggle to get a decent night’s sleep, which can become a terrible thing for mothers. The last thing you want is to wake up every couple of hours because your little one begins to cry. So, you must work hard to eliminate any stumbling blocks and ensure your bundle of joy falls asleep at the same time every evening.
Some information highlights some of the most common sleep issues for babies and small children. Use this post to help identify why your little one might struggle to sleep, and then come up with some suitable solutions. At the end of the day, a regular sleep routine will benefit both mother and baby.

The temperature is wrong
The temperature of the room in which you expect your child to sleep could play a significant role in their ability to drop off. That is especially the case if you have a baby in the home at the moment as they are more sensitive to temperature changes than most of us.
Ideally, it would help if you aimed to have your home’s temperature somewhere between sixteen and twenty-five degrees celsius for the best outcomes. If you live in the US, that means you need to set your thermostat between sixty and seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit.
You can also ensure you keep lots of warm blankets in the crib or bed so your little one can regulate their temperature without your assistance. Whatever happens, making sure your child doesn’t get too hot or too cold during the night will make a massive difference to their sleeping routine.
Your baby has health issues
Many health issues can affect babies, and some are more obvious than others. For instance, if your child has a stomach bug, you’re probably going to know about it. However, if they have something more subtle, you might not pick up on the problem.
With that in mind, you need to check your baby regularly to make sure you spot any issues before they become too severe. You could also take your child for a checkup if you have any concerns. The doctor should be in the perfect position to identify any problems and provide treatment.
Little things like rashes can cause discomfort that prevents babies from sleeping or being exposed to the sun. So, keep a close eye on your child’s skin. Identifying baby acne is somewhat of an art form during the early stages, but you can do it if you conduct enough research and learn to spot the symptoms. The same goes for any other health condition.

They’re not comfortable
You must make your baby as comfortable as possible before you set them down to sleep each evening. We already mentioned the need to ensure the temperature is right for your child, but there are many other things to consider.
For instance, you need to make sure the crib or bed you use for your child is as comfortable as it can be. That could mean you add some extra pillows or blankets to ensure your bundle of joy always feels amazing. You might also think about playing some soothing music into the room when it’s time for your child to sleep.
Whatever happens, you just need to make sure the room is relaxing and inviting if you want your little one to drift off to sleep without any issues every night.
The lighting is wrong
Your choice of lighting could play a significant role in getting your child to sleep in the evenings. If you leave them in a room with a bright, white light, there is a reasonable chance they will struggle to drift off to sleep. So, you might like to take a look at some of the alternative options on the table.
Lots of others choose to purchase colour-changing bulbs so they can create a relaxing atmosphere in their child’s bedroom. Red and blue are excellent choices for the light because they promote calmness and tranquillity. Still, you can choose any colours you want.
You might also consider installing a smart dimmer switch or something similar. The process is straightforward, and you can do it without professional assistance. Just log into YouTube and watch some instructional videos if you get stuck.

They miss their mother
Lots of babies and small children struggle to sleep at night because they miss their mother. Indeed, that is why so many parents will sit in their child’s room and read them a bedtime story before bed. You should think about doing that if you’re having trouble getting your bundle of joy into a routine.
There are lots of popular books that contain perfect bedtime stories for your little one. So, all you need to do is search for the best ones online and make a purchase. You won’t regret it, and it could make all the difference to the time at which your loved one falls asleep.
Sitting in your child’s room as they drift off is a fantastic idea as it will prevent them from missing you too much or feeling like they’re missing out on the action. Even so, you need to strike a balance. The last thing you need is to raise a child who can’t sleep without you in the room.
They have side effects from medication
Children often have to take medication from their doctor for a range of different reasons. Maybe your little one had an ear infection or something similar? Perhaps they had a cold a couple of weeks ago, and they’re still taking antiviral medication?
Regardless of the reason for the medication, it is possible the side effects could prevent your loved one from sleeping at the end of the day. With that in mind, you should consult your doctor immediately if you have any concerns.
It is possible that your child might need to change their medication if they have side effects that prevent them from getting to sleep. However, the doctor will never know about that if you don’t tell them.

Your little one is stressed
Most parents don’t think about this, but lots of babies get stressed from time to time. Perhaps your loved one threw a little tantrum when you told them it was time to go to bed? Maybe your partner has been working away for a couple of weeks, and so your bundle of joy hasn’t seen their father in a while?
Both of those situations could lead to your child feeling stressed, which could negatively impact their ability to sleep at night. If you think that is the case, it’s time to work out some solutions to help your child relax.
Singing softly or reading bedtime stories when the little one is in bed will help them to unwind and remove any stress from their minds. You might also think about keeping a photo of yourself and their father at the side of the bed at night. That should help to provide at least a small level of comfort.
They’ve had too much caffeine
Most adults consume caffeine all day long to boost their energy levels. However, children already have lots of energy and enthusiasm, and so too much caffeine can have an adverse effect.
It’s fair to say that most babies and small children will not drink ten cups of tea or coffee each day. However, it’s also vital to realise that lots of drinks designed for children also contain high caffeine levels.
As a parent, you need to keep your loved one away from that ingredient as much as possible. If your child drinks a couple of Coca-Cola glasses every day, they will consume a lot of caffeine, which can lead to headaches, anxiety, and sleeplessness.
You should now have a reasonable idea about some of the issues that might keep your little one awake at night. Use this info to identify the problems you have at home and turn them around as quickly as possible.
