They get knocked down but they get back up again #TearsIntoSmiles

As you know we are a rather outdoorsy family, we spend a lot of time in the woods climbing trees, making camp fires, playing crazy golf and generally just having fun.

We love being out and about for various reasons:

  • It’s cheap – it costs nothing to go out for a bike ride, a scooter ride or just a trip to the park or a walk in the woods
  • It keeps us all fit and healthy – neither Paul or I are gym goers but we want our children to see us being active and encourage them to do the same
  • It removes their want of watching TV for too long
  • Fresh air and exercise help to ensure the children are hungry
  • Fresh air and exercise help to ensure the children are tired and sleep well

Of course bumps, cuts and scrapes are par for the course when you spend so much time outdoors, both of my children are always covered in scrapes or bruises where they’ve either fallen over, knocked a knee on the tree on the way down or hit each other a little too hard with their foam toy swords.

They are rather typical kids of 4 and 7 years old, just like all their friends sporting another mark and showing it off in the playground, usually covered in a plaster to make them feel better – when most of the time when there was no need for one.

I find Emmy hunting and searching hard to find a red mark or a scratch so she can have a plaster on, Harry on the other hand isn’t a fan of wearing them. I have shared previously the contents of our first aid kit and the essentials you should store in them, I do also keep a mini first aid kit in my handbag – this contains a few plasters, antiseptic wipes and some Savlon all kept in a ziplock sandwich bag for easy access when I need it, because you never know when the next accident will happen. Of course they are happiest when their plasters have funky designs on them so they are loving the new Star Wars and Frozen designs from Elastoplast, even Harry has been donning one this week when he came off his bike.

No, I’m not a mean Mummy – he asked for a picture to show Daddy

We always make a joke out of cuts and grazes, bumps and falls as it helps to take their minds off of their ouchy – so we tell off the object they’ve fallen over, make silly faces or ask them if we need to chop off their arm/leg/finger etc – cue fits of giggles and it’s soon forgotten about.

If that fails there’s always singing: To the tune of Chumbawamba’s ‘I Get Knocked Down’

“You got knocked down
But you got up again
They’re never going to keep you down

Kissing the ouch away
Kissing the ouch away

He drinks a milky drink
He drinks a soda drink
He drinks a fizzy drink
He drinks a healthy drink

We sing the songs that remind you
of some happy times
We sing the songs that remind you
of our silly times

Oh, my little boy, little boy, little boy

You got knocked down
But you got up again
They’re never going to keep you down

Kissing the ouch away
Kissing the ouch away

He drinks a milky drink
He drinks a soda drink
He drinks a fizzy drink
He drinks a healthy drink

We sing the songs that remind you
of some happy times
We sing the songs that remind you
of our silly times

Don’t cry baby
Mummy’s brave soldier

You got knocked down
But you got up again
They’re never going to keep you down”

Aww bless there will always be scratches and bruises for sure. As a child I loved the outdoors but they never liked me so I always had some sort of plaster on me all the time

I agree, even as an adult exercise is a great way of building up our appetite and helping us gain a better quality of sleep!

My daughter is the same, just loves a plaster even if there is nothing there!
