Christmas is fast approaching and as a mum of two children, I am very keen to keep the Christmas magic alive for as long as I possibly can. Emmy is almost 10 now and Harry 7 so I know I’m on borrowed time. Children stop believing in Santa much earlier these days, on average the age is 8 when those awkward questions start to arise. They hear mumblings in the playground from friends with older siblings and their own belief begins to fade.

I’ve fielded a few doubtful questions from Emmy already, and we’ve gone with “Santa brings presents to those who believe”, she does still, for now, it could be to get more presents but I do think the magic is still alive for her.

Every year, I manage to ‘catch’ Santa in the act, snap a picture and show the kids in the morning. Eddie the elf comes to visit every December and brings more magic with him which certainly helps matters.

I was recently introduced to a beautiful new Christmas book called ‘The Christmas Present’, this is a magical book written by the very talented Alexander McCabe.

Alexander is a self-published Scottish writer who wrote The Christmas Present for his son, and I honestly don’t think it will be long before we see another of his books hitting our shelves. He certainly does have a way with words which keeps you page-turning to see what’s next in the story.

The Christmas Present is a beautifully magical story about a little boy who loses his belief in Santa and runs away to live with his father.

He believes that by living with his father he will be richer and far happier until he meets his very own Elf who shows him that it’s not money which makes you rich.

Every child has their very own Elf, I bet you didn’t know that! Well, they do in this story anyway. Your Elf watches over you and reports back to Santa.

Gabriel’s Elf is called Gabriel (all elves have the same name as their child), he comes to visit with Gladys, Santa’s favourite Reindeer. They arrive to help Gabriel believe again, both in a bid to make him happy again and to stop themselves being banished to the South Pole – Elves are banished to the South Pole when their child stops believing in Santa, only being allowed to return once a child believes again – and no Elf wants to live in the boring South Pole with no friends to play with.

Together, with the help of a magic snow globe, they show Gabriel different Christmas days in different houses and he learns that it isn’t the most expensive gifts which make you happy after all.

I won’t give away too much of the story, you will need to read this for yourself – or with your children! This book is available in WHSmith and on Amazon (aff link). You can purchase the book itself for £7.99 or in a gift presentation box complete with your very own Snow Globe just like in the book, this gift set is available for £19.99. You can also purchase the kindle edition for £2.99.

Alexander will be touring WHSmith stores signing his lovely book – you can find all the dates and locations of the signing on his website www.gabrieltheelf.com.
