Choosing a school for your child might feel overwhelming, which is only natural considering it’s such a big responsibility and one you shouldn’t take lightly. Of course, it requires some careful planning and research, as there are a variety of things to think about and discover about each of your local schools. Establish Your Requirements

Start by considering what matters to you and your family the most. For instance, does the school need to be within walking distance of your home or is there an appropriate bus route your child could take? Your requirements could be more specific, like a language barrier or special educational needs. It might be important to you that your child’s friends will be attending the new school too. Figure out what your priorities are and then rank the schools based on whether or not they meet those requirements.

Do Your Research

Once you’re clear on what you need the school to offer, you can then start to research and gather the necessary information that you’ll need to make an informed decision. Have a look at things like the school league tables and previous Ofsted reports. Try and gain some insights on the curriculum and the values of the school by browsing their website, downloading a prospectus or speaking directly to the teachers at the school. It’s important to visit the schools and get a proper feel for them so that you can establish whether or not they are a good fit for your child.

Visit the Schools

If possible, it would be wise to arrange to visit the school on a normal day so that you can see what it’s like in action. Open mornings etc. are not always a true reflection of how the school operates. If you get to speak to any of the existing students during your visit, be sure to ask them if they like it there and if they get on well with the teachers etc. Essentially, you want to understand whether or not the school has a friendly and welcoming feel, if you’re made to feel comfortable and if the building itself seems safe and clean.

Involve Your Son or Daughter

Above all else, you must ask your child for their opinion on the matter. It might seem strange asking such a tiny person for their view, but they are the one that’s going to be spending the most of their time at the school so it’s important that they like it and feel comfortable. It’s also important for young people to feel like they are involved somewhat in these sorts of situations so that they feel a sense of control and confidence.
