Mornings here are hectic to say the least, as we walk to school we all have to be ready and out of the house by 8.30am to get there on time – that may not sound too bad however getting myself and 2 children up washed, dressed and fed by that time is a challenge and is something which is done to many different alarms.
I set an alarm to wake me up in the morning, one to wake the children, another as a reminder that they need to be eating breakfast by this time and another to start getting them dressed. There is another as a countdown warning that there is only 15 minutes left so all teeth need brushing and hair doing and then a final one to leave the house on time. It may seem excessive however come mid-end week when we are all tired and dragging it does help to kick us up the bum and get moving and turn off the TV.
We have already begun trying to change things and make the mornings easier for us all – for me that means getting the clothes laid out the evening before and Harry’s lunch box made the night before and for the children it means actually listening to my instructions to avoid the mad rush and shouting when they are still in their PJ’s at 8.15am.
The problem we have is that Emmy is like her Dad and doesn’t want to eat as soon as she wakes up, she needs time to actually become fully awake before she is ready. Harry wants to eat immediately, in fact that’s usually why her wakes as he is hungry. Because Emmy can’t eat for around half hour to 45 minutes after waking u it makes things even more rushed which is why I have begun introducing fruit smoothies in the morning – this was she is getting the nutrients she needs and stay full until lunchtime (I do also try to make her some toast or cereals too however if she doesn’t eat much I don’t have to worry).
Banana, Blueberry & Strawberry Smoothie:
Ingredients:
- 1 Banana – cut into chunks
- 8-10 Strawberries – cut the tops off
- 10-15 Blueberries
- 300ml Almond Milk
- 1 Tbsp Honey (optional)
- Ice (optional)
Add all the ingredients into a blender and mix until smooth
Serve immediately
Fruit Smoothie with Ready Brek
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- handful of strawberries
- 350 ml Almond Milk
- 32 tbsp. Ready Brek
- 1 tbsp. honey (optional)
As before add all the ingredients into a mixer and blend until smooth
This makes a thicker smoothie but by adding the ready brek if helps to include added vitamins, minerals and whole oats into the smoothie unnoticed as well as providing a good source of fibre too.
This will help to keep the children full until lunch time.
Serve immediately.

If like me you are sneaky, you can also add spinach, nuts, seeds and other ingredients your children are adamant they don’t like, as once blended they won’t know they are there unless they see you put them in!
