Effective Planning When Moving House

Posted on November 29, 2019August 16, 2023

**Collaborative post**

Moving house can be the most exciting time in your life, a new home, new surroundings, and the opportunity to make a place your own. Our nesting instincts often kick in when we move into a new home, and we often get a deep sense of enjoyment making it your own.

But of course, along with all of the excitement of a move comes the stress. The level of work that goes into a move can be massive and there is always the worry that something might go wrong, or that things may get broken.

It is, therefore, essential to plan well for your move and to allow yourself plenty of time to get the job done.

Making The Necessary Arrangements

Once you have a new address that you will be moving in to you should contact all of the companies that currently have your details and update them on your new address. You’ll need to cancel all of your utilities to your existing home and settle up any money owed.

Next up you will need to work out how you are going to actually move everything. You may want to take much of the stress out of the move by hiring a company to do the work for you. Find out more about what services are on offer and shop around for quotes.

If you would prefer to, you could always hire a van and do everything yourself. This can save you some money, but it will ultimately be a lot more work and can add to your stresses.

Clear Out Unwanted Items

When it comes to moving home it’s usually a great opportunity to get rid of a lot of unwanted stuff. Over the years you will no doubt have acquired items you no longer need or use. There is no point in taking these with you. If these items are still in good condition either sell them online, have a yard sale, or donate them to charity. The less you have to pack, the better!

Packing Your Possessions

You should start packing as early as possible as it is a long slow process. Think about the things that you will need between now and when you move and leave these until last. But for everything else, the sooner it is boxed up, the better.

Get hold of as many boxes as possible. You can obviously but boxes for moving, but if you, or anyone you know works in a store, you could reuse the empty boxes that stock gets sent in.

Start with the heaviest items at the bottom of the box. Make sure that you do not overload it though as this could cause injury when lifting, or the box to break.

Be sure and label each box starting what is in it and where it is to go in the new home. This will help you immensely when it comes to unpacking at the other end.

Any delicate items will need to be bubble wrapped inside their boxes. Make sure that the boxes are labelled as fragile, and are not stacked underneath heavier boxes.
