London is a treasure trove of family-friendly activities, blending history, culture, and fun in ways that captivate children and adults alike. Whether you’re planning a weekend outing or a school holiday adventure. Read on for our recommendations for Top kid-friendly attractions in London.
Combining free attractions and paid experiences, London is a wonderful place to spend time with children. As a family, we love nothing more than wandering along the South Bank, people watching or popping into many of the free museums London has to offer, and always our days out include a visit to Covent Garden to see the street entertainers.
Most times, our visits can be completely free, barring the train fares, as we take a picnic and just enjoy everything on offer for free.
Here are some must-visit spots that have been hits with my own children, Emmy and Harry.
Top Kid-Friendly Attractions in London
1. Natural History Museum, South Kensington
A family favourite, the Natural History Museum offers interactive exhibits that bring science to life. From the awe-inspiring dinosaur skeletons to the immersive earthquake simulator, there’s something to spark every child’s curiosity. Best of all, entry is free, making it a budget-friendly option for families. Online advanced booking is advisable, especially in school holidays; however, you are able to just turn up on the day and join a queue to get in.
2. Science Museum, South Kensington

Just a stone’s throw from the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum is a hands-on haven for inquisitive minds. The Wonderlab gallery is particularly engaging, featuring interactive experiments and live demonstrations that make learning fun.

3. Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter, Leavesden

For young wizards and witches, this behind-the-scenes tour is pure magic. Explore iconic sets like the Great Hall and Diagon Alley, and discover the secrets behind the special effects. It’s a bit outside central London, but well worth the trip for any Harry Potter fan.

4. Young V&A, Bethnal Green
Formerly the V&A Museum of Childhood, the revamped Young V&A is designed with children in mind. Interactive exhibits encourage creativity and play, making it an ideal spot for younger kids to explore art and design in a hands-on environment.

5. London Transport Museum, Covent Garden
This museum offers a fascinating journey through the history of London’s transport system. Kids can climb aboard vintage buses and trains, and the All Aboard play zone is perfect for younger visitors. The museum’s Hidden London tours also provide a unique glimpse into disused underground stations.
6. ZSL London Zoo, Regent’s Park

Home to over 750 species, ZSL London Zoo offers immersive experiences like the walk-through Monkey Valley and Butterfly Paradise. Daily talks and feeding sessions provide educational entertainment, and the zoo’s central location makes it easily accessible.
We haven’t been here for a little while, so we are definitely overdue a visit, especially as the children have animals adopted here – Emmy, a giraffe, and Harry, a tiger. These were adopted for them via a PR company many years ago; however, explaining to the children they actually couldn’t bring home their “new pets” took some explaining and many tears! (They were very young at the time, though, so it was to be expected.).
7. Chessington World of Adventures, Greater London

Combining a theme park, zoo, and SEA LIFE centre, Chessington offers a full day of excitement. The World of Jumanji, featuring the Mandrill Mayhem roller coaster, is a recent addition that’s been a hit with thrill-seekers. For younger children, the Gruffalo River Ride Adventure brings a beloved storybook to life.

8. Madame Tussauds London, Marylebone
Get up close with lifelike wax figures of celebrities, historical figures, and fictional characters. The Marvel Super Heroes 4D experience and the Star Wars exhibit add an extra layer of excitement for kids.
9. Tootbus Kids Tour, Central London
This hop-on-hop-off bus tour is tailored for children, with engaging commentary and a route that covers major landmarks. It’s a fun and educational way to see the city without tiring out little legs.

10. ArcelorMittal Orbit & Slide, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
For adrenaline-loving families, the ArcelorMittal Orbit offers panoramic views of London and the world’s longest tunnel slide. Children over eight can enjoy the thrilling descent, while the surrounding park provides ample space for picnics and play.
Tips for a Smooth Family Day Out:
Plan Ahead: Many attractions require advance booking, especially during school holidays.
Travel Smart: Consider using public transport to avoid parking hassles; many sites are well-connected by the Tube and buses.
Pack Essentials: Snacks, water, and a change of clothes can be lifesavers during long days out.
Engage the Kids: Involve children in planning the itinerary to build excitement and ensure the activities align with their interests.
Exploring London with children can be a delightful adventure filled with discovery and fun. These attractions have provided my family with countless memories, and I hope they do the same for yours.
